Honors Intermediate Composition
During the Fall Semester of 2015 I was enrolled in Honors Intermediate Composition. This honors seminar is a fast-paced, more in-depth version of the traditional English composition course that many undergraduates are required to take. This Honors Intermediate Composition class was not what I expected of an English class. Instead of being assigned lengthy readings and required to write long research papers on random topics, this class mainly focused on improving our individual writing skills and learning new writing styles. Instead of papers, each student set up their own blog and our major assignments were written in the form of online blog posts. Not only did this make writing assignments less stressful, but also I was able to learn how to apply traditional writing to an online setting, a skill that is very useful in our technological society. The class topic for the semester was media, so each student did research on various topics relating to media and then wrote four different blogs. The topics for each blog were fairly general so each student had the opportunity to write about media topics that they were interested in. Because the topics were things I chose and I was therefore interested in, it was easier to do research and write more passionate pieces. I was also able to learn a lot about media in our society. The final project of the semester was a presentation on a personal hobby, which was an interesting way to learn more about my classmates and a fun way to end the semester. I am thankful for the friendships and connections I have made as part of this course and I will continue to use all that I learned to better my professional writing in the future.
