Undergraduate Biomedical Research and Mentoring Program: No Pain, No Gain: Understanding Muscle Pain
During the 2015 Spring Semester I was apart of the University Honors Program’s Biomedical Research and Mentoring Program. When I first heard about this experience I was very excited to learn more because as a first year student I knew that I needed to gain some research experience and learn basic laboratory skills. I applied to a few different labs and was matched with Dr. Mike Jankowski’s lab in the Anesthesia and Pain Management department at Children’s Hospital. My mentor was Jessica Ross, a third-year neuroscience doctoral student. I worked in the lab every Tuesday and Thursday morning from around 730 to 1130 a.m. and also came in early some Wednesday mornings and weekends as needed. This experience provided me with a great foundation in research, as I was able to learn basic skills as well as become familiar with some more complicated molecular procedures. Throughout the semester I was surprised by the amount of independence I was able to gain in the lab. I learned the real-time PCR procedure and became responsible for running these assays on my own. This independence pushed me to work on my communication skills and I was able to form relationships with my mentor and other lab members because of it. I learned a lot about myself and the research process as well. I became a lot more familiar with neuroscience related literature and can now read and understand a lot more than I was able to in the beginning. Thanks to this experience I will be continuing research this summer as a part of UC’s SURF Neuroscience program.
For the dissemination portion of this experience I presented a little about my research and my learning and growth through this experience to other RaMP students and their mentors. Here is a copy of this presentation I gave at the end of the experience:
